New research involving clinically obese surgical patients shows the non-invasive Tensys® T-Line® provides comparable blood pressure measurements to that of an invasive radial arterial line.

San Diego, CA | May 31, 2006 -- Research presented at the International Anesthesia Research Society 80th Clinical and Scientific Congress, San Francisco March 24-28, 2006.

Data from the clinical study conducted at Northwestern University School of Medicine, Chicago Illinois, demonstrated that the Tensys T-Line®, a continuous, non-invasive blood pressure monitor, compared favorably to measurements obtained from a contra-lateral radial arterial line. The T-Line® provided a beat-to-beat arterial waveform and accompanying systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure numbers in a challenging patient population. The data confirmed excellent correlation with a mean error of -1.6 ± 7.6, 4.2 ± 8.1 and 3.3 ± 7.5 for systolic, diastolic and mean respectively.

"The T-Line® is really a nice option for those patients with a B.M.I. greater than 35 (kg/m2) who are undergoing surgical cases where frequent arterial blood sampling is unnecessary. Often positioning the blood pressure cuff on large conical-shaped upper arms is difficult and produces data that is either inaccurate and or inconsistent." said R-Jay Marcus, MD, Assistant Professor Northwestern University. "Likewise, if you have a difficult time placing an arterial line, the T-Line® may avert the need for multiple needle sticks and the potential complications which may accompany each attempt."

This study enrolled clinically obese patients (B.M.I. > 30Kg/m2) who were scheduled to undergo surgery requiring intra-arterial catheter placement for blood pressure monitoring. Simultaneous contra-lateral measurements were obtained from the invasive A-line and non-invasive T-Line® for the duration of the procedure. Data from the first nine (9) patients totaled 1079 minutes which was presented during a moderated poster session.

The T-Line® monitor provides a non-invasive alternative to continuously monitor critical blood pressure information. Rapid changes in pressure, which can occur within a few heartbeats, may signal potentially serious complications. The TL-150 allows the clinician the ability to observe blood pressure changes in real time affording early detection of hemodynamic events. This beat-to-beat information can be used to rapidly intervene as necessary to safely manage the patient.

About Tensys® Medical

Tensys® Medical, Inc. is the leader in real-time blood pressure management. The Tensys® T-Line®, the company's lead product, was cleared by the FDA in November 2002 for non-invasive, continuous real-time blood pressure monitoring.

The T-Line non-invasively and continuously measures a patient's blood pressure at the radial artery. It offers clinicians better, more effective control over patient safety by allowing them to quickly monitor and manage blood pressure variations. The T-Line® provides continuous, real-time data and has clinically equivalent accuracy to that of the arterial line (A-line). The device is based on Tensymetry, the company's proprietary and patented technology for non-invasively extracting the continuous, beat-to-beat pressure waveform from the radial artery without the use of any external calibration device. The science of Tensymetry is the result of over eight years of research and development.

Tensys® Medical is based in San Diego, California and was founded in November 1995. For more information, please visit the company's Web site at www.tensysmedical.com.
